Redesign,
Game

UX/UI

I got the challenge to redesign a popular PC game's menu. The main-menu had a lot of features, both offline and online. My answer was to have an easy, clear onboarding where the menu guides the player through the features.

I was tasked to present a redesign and was expected to spend 5-10 hours on it. The main issue was that new players were lost and did not understand what lies where, how to proceed, and DLC news invading the space.

How was I going to deconstruct a menu in a high-end game, while still keeping excellent usability, without compromising on news, updates, and the navigation? I spent time doing proper research to understand what the typical user of these type of games expect. Conducting a heuristic analysis helped me locate pain points. I found people that play these type of games a lot, and iterated on the design with their thoughts in mind. This resulted in a healthy design process where I learn to trust and question which methods I use for each project, and providing a new design solution for the main menu.

The test was well perceived. The new main menu sectioned 12 items and was now down to 3 sorted by relevancy and need. The visual hierarchy was reworked; Play and Player identity was now in focus. The readability was improved with the intention to avoid frustration and to be easy to read, even if the player is playing from the couch or the PC.
